Randomness: one post of ethical conversion

Longevity ResearchDo you believe in longevity research? I didn’t, until few hours back, till I read Scott Wainner’s post on Living Well, Indefinitely + $20 Blogging Challenge. I must confess that I visited his blog solely because I came across the phrase “$20 Blogging Challenge”, but after I read his blog post, I should say, he made me start believing in Longevity Research.

Why? I used to think it’s better to die when your time comes rather than live till you’re 100 and experience the effects of ageing and being dependent. I used to think that one should leave to make room for the next generation of the earth’s population. Practically, I used to have my moral boundaries. But I should confess that by reading his post, I’ve found answers to certain things that I’ve been looking answers for.

Do you believe that religion wants you to not live long? Or do you believe in the same viewpoints that I believed in? Then, take my word and just read through his blog post. Not only did I question the integrity of my beliefs, I was also converted to my current stance. Stance that makes my t-shirt say “I support longevity research”.

Longevity research allows us to experience the life we have longer and better. It not only supports long living, but probably de-accelerate, stop or even reverse the ageing process, with prospective advances to come. Ageing is a disease. And it had been a disease. What if we could cure this disease? You don’t know what you got till it’s gone. Do you know the importance of what you got?

Finally, I’d like to quote few lines of Scott’s post.

“There won’t be any such thing as immortality in our foreseeable future, because asteroids, nuclear attacks, cosmic events, and even car crashes and other accidents, remain threats. But the goal of wiping out cancer and heart disease (the two biggest killers) and either genetically tricking our cells into not decaying or using technologies to repair and replace aged cells (stem cells, nanotechnology devices) will go a long way towards making the tragedy of death an infrequent occurance. We shouldn’t have to live with a life expectancy cap, knowing that we will degenerate and eventually perish for eternity. We should be able to live every day in full vibrant health, fully expecting to wake up the next morning, until an asteroid hits us every 65 Million years or so or until an 18 wheeler runs a red light and smacks us”

So visit his blog, if time and resources permit, enter his challenge and support this great cause under-attack by some narrow-minded conservatives. It’s worth much more than the $20 you get.
