24 Productivity Tips for Bloggers

blogging-insights: 24 Productivity Tips for BloggersI often hear bloggers saying - “I have three blogs but I barely have to to even update one frequently”. Well, if you have a 9-5 job, it’s understandable. But sometimes, we just tend to think to ourselves - “Gosh! I’ve been in front of the computer the whole day, and I haven’t even done anything productive”.

So, do you have productivity issues with your blogging? Do you think you can do much better and much more with your time if you know how to do it? Well, today, these 24 Productivity tips for bloggers might help. They can save your time, energy, sanity and your money! In a nutshell, they can help you to become a more productive blogger.

  1. Try to write a more than one post at once, as much as you can.
  2. Moderate your blog comments at a specific time. Not every 5 minutes a comment gets posted.
  3. Automate things that need to be frequently updated. Like Sitemaps.
  4. Workout your blog posts’s structure before starting to blog.
  5. Keep your IM Client, E-mail notifier and etc., offline while blogging.
  6. If you’re a person who gets easily distracted, try blogging from a place where there are less disturbances.
  7. If you can, have a specific time on your day to post to your blog/moderate comments and etc.
  8. You can’t be on top of every social media site. Choose a specific number of communities you want to be a part of.
  9. Don’t get carried away while creating content for your post. If you care about your time, be specific and concise.
  10. Take enough time to analyze your blog statistics. But don’t do it 5 times a day.
  11. Maintain a daily to-do list with realistic goals, and stick to it. We lose our time when we are trying to figure out what we want to do with our time.
  12. Do the hardest thing on your to-do list as the first thing. Temporary motivational boost awaits…
  13. The easiest way to get something done is to nuke it. Know which thing you can nuke to make more time when you’re short of it.
  14. No matter how tempting reading RSS Feeds might be, don’t get carried away.
  15. You don’t have to read every post that comes up, although you can learn something new from most of the things you read.
  16. Let things slip-away if times become extremely rough and make up your mind. People can’t be 100% accurate.
  17. If you feel like the juice is not worth the squeeze, throw away the fruit and get another.
  18. Have a list of specific things you want to achieve within a specific week/month. Your daily to-do lists will be largely influenced by these.
  19. If you look for images in your blog posts, use creative commons searches. Saves you time and gives you necessary permission to use them.
  20. Do not multitask. You will lose the focus of both tasks at hand.
  21. Do what you need to do. Not what’s fun.
  22. Do frequent value assessments on your doings. If something doesn’t create value - to the extent that you’d like to, it’s better left undone.
  23. Be specific in your blog chores for the day. Instead of saying I will do 2 posts today, try to incorporate the length, the title and when you’re going to do it.
  24. If you’ve got a great idea for a post, write it somewhere visible and look at it from time to time. This will give you more ideas to further improve a great idea.

Please contribute if you’ve got any more productivity tips. If you picked up something new, good luck with implementing that. Let me know how it went.

Great advice. It is quite easy for a blogger to get overwhelmed by the myriad of activities required to keep a blog going. I stumbled this because I consider it great advice. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Wonderful tips! I’ve found that being disciplined had the advantage of preventing burnout as well since I don’t have unrealistic expectations of myself. AND I’ve made a point to give myself “time off” - and stick to it even if I really want to be online.

True! Not matter how effective you are in your goal setting, unrealistic goals can back you down.

Great information for someone like me. I always have this problem of getting other important things neglected because of the blog. According to this post there are few things I should start practicing. Would like to add one more tip to the above list,
I shorten the blogging frequency and focused on writing lengthy but quality posts. This way I can get away with 2-3 posts per week. some might argue this is not the way to go. But worked for me so far. By doing this I get more stumbles, reddits, diggs because I can concentrate on the quality of the post rather than having to worry about the next blog post. :D So the traffic levels are not going down when i am not writing. As soon as I see a drop I take 2-3 hours and publish the next post..

This is a great tip Eranda. It might be different for different bloggers. But overall, focusing on the quality can bring you so much good than when you’re focusing on quantity.

Pretty good list there. I would like to add this, if you don’t mind:

Count up the tasks that consume your time and can easily get out of control.
Set aside a certain universal amount of time for each.
Work on each task for only that amount of time, take a few minutes break, move on to the next…repeat.

    Example:

Read feeds for 1 hour, collecting links for commenting. (no commenting till that hour is up)
Comment on blogs for 1 hour. (that’s what you collected those links for)
    Digg activities for 1 hour.
    StumbleUpon activities for 1 hour
    etc. for 1 hour.
    etc. for 1 hour.

I wrote an application called Instant Boss that will help you keep the limits and remind you to stop and take a break, and remind you to get back to work.

I hope you and your readers find it useful.

Simple but important points. Well, the point no. 10 is what most bloggers do at least twice a day! You are right, no need to check the stats over and over again!

Number 8… I am only active on BlogCatalog! The other ones didn’t seem to generate any viewers (or maybe i was too lazy there  )

#19 - I always use pics and photos I take myself on my blog (unless i state otherwise - which has only happened a few few times).. =)
