Do you receive loads of comments with only two lines? Or just simply words like., “Nice Article…”? For some of you it might be just another comment but for most of you, this will be yet another blog comment spam mechanism. For most of the niche bloggers, especially do-follow blog owners, this is a nightmare scenario. It’s easy to discard the gibberish spam comments left by spam bots but discarding a comment left by a human is not that easy.
The comments attached to a blog post are there for a reason. Some see it as a way of developing a discussion on the direction where the blog post is headed and some see it as a way of clarifying the content of the blog post by asking questions and so on. But, here’s the deal. It’s alright if you want to appreciate the blogger for his/her efforts. But, you should do it in a way that it is beneficial for you and the blogger.
For an instance, leaving a comments in a do-follow blog with just two words is very beneficial for you since you can develop backlinks to a blog of your choice without any extra effort or cost. But it’s not the same thing for the author. Chances are that there are many others who are doing the same thing (leaving two word comments) and 20 comments saying “Nice article” is not going to help the author at all. Though you do it deliberately or not, it might be evident to the author that you just left a comment to gain a backlink. And therefore, the author may in fact blacklist you from the blog and that’s not something you can blame that blogger for.
When I find an interesting blog post, I always read it. But, that doesn’t mean that I always comment on it. I will only comment on it if I feel there’s something I want to add and something I am not unclear about. And if I come across a niche that I am not familiar with or interested in, I will hold back my comments since I will totally be classified as a no-good pole cat for leaving irrelevant comments. Some of my friends who are niche bloggers, complain all the time that these kind of things happen and I know what it feels when someone manipulates your blog to get some Google juice.
Comments should be a way of interacting with a blogger and that blog’s community. People tend to read the follow-up comments at times when the blog post is interesting. So, if I leave a two word comment on a blog post, that just means that I’m being major selfish and making that blog post’s quality drain out as a result of my personal agenda. And, with that, I can’t blame that blogger if he/she chooses to label me as a spammer, since there’s no difference between the prime objective of spam bots and me.
I tend to follow a code of ethics – maybe that’s a big weakness in an ever competitive niche. Over to you…
This is true for blogs that has the top commentators plug in as well , maybe worse for them since if that blog has a good PR they tend to leave around 3-4 spam comments
Right on mate! I’ve experienced that.
Thanks for writing about this issue. I have made it a personal policy too not to drop SPAM disguise as COMMENT just for the sake of getting backlinks. I quite agree that it is tempting to drop two words in a hurry and zoom off, but one should apply the golden rule to this issue. How will I love visitors to comment on my post?
It is good to add value to a post by contributing an idea or asking a question that will further the discussion.
Nice job, please keep it up. cheers.
