How long should you wait before you monetize a blog? – An unseen perspective

How long should you wait before you monetize a blog? - An unseen perspective If you ask top bloggers how long a blogger should wait to monetize a blog, their answers can range from 2 months to 1 year. But, I tend to have a totally different opinion on this and one that most of these A-listers would disagree with. What’s my answer to the question? You should not wait at all to monetize a blog. Surprised? Let me explain.

People will tell you to wait before you get a certain number of subscribers or a certain amount of stable traffic before you monetize a blog. But why? These are their claims:

One – You visitors will be reluctant to trust you as a reliable source if you put up ads.

Two – You will not make any money in the beginning.

But, this is what they don’t realize.

One – someday later, you will indeed put up ads on your blog. If a person doesn’t trust you as a reliable source if you put up ads on your blog then, what makes you think that, this person will trust you now? The point is that, there will always be people hardwired to their beliefs that blogs shouldn’t be monetized. You won’t make a dime out of them. It’s the other 99% of your online audience you should worry about. If you offer worthy content, you will not possibly put off a prospective subscriber with your ads.

Two – it isn’t true at all that you will not make any money when you’re starting up. However, it is possible that you will make somewhat less money. But, if you make $0.05 a day from AdSense, and if you wait for 2 months to monetize your blog, that’s $3 thrown away for no reason at all. As I said earlier, if you offer worthy content, you will not possibly put off a prospective subscriber with your ads.

One of the bloggers that I admire most is Amit Agarwal of Digital Inspiration. I watched an interview where he says that a new blogger should wait at least 1 year before monetizing his/her blog. If I took his advice, I would have been much much less financially stable now, which sucks:) Reminds me of my earlier article – Don’t do it just because A-listers tell you to do so!

I monetized my blog from day 1 I am into blogging. First 2 months I did nothing but the 3rd month it starts growing and growing and now after a year plus, blogging is my second income source apart from my conventional business.

Agreed do not listen to people, do it based on your heart feeling and your confidence. Passion and consistency will pull you through.

Yep. I agree with you. Back when I was giving blogging tips I wrote an article about the same subject. I was talking about how Darren Rowse said to wait. But me and you alike say, “Why?” So we can throw up ads mid way through our accomplishments and then make loyal readers angry? How about we throw them up now, if people like us then they like us, and we make some cash while we build up our rep.

As long as your ads don’t make your blog look like garbage, then I think they’re actually pretty useful to the user.

Actually, I immediately placed ads in my blog during my day 1. It is a good thing because that way, I just made myself aware what to do and not to when it comes to blog monetization.

I completely agree with you. I think the very first beginning of a blog the blogger should already try to monetize it. if they have any need of making money out of their blog. They can post about business opportunities they took and give proof of what is going good and not. Talk about their own experiences or even put ads. Depending on the blogger there are many ways to monetize a blog.

  5. Same here.. I monetize my blog on the first week of it going live, I think.

Been getting like 2-10 cents a day, but it’s like $1-2 now. Not much but can at least pay my blog hosting fee by itself :)

Some suggests to monetize it straight away, some don’t. It’s up to you I guess. Just don’t overdo it

  6. This question I have never thought about before, but for me it comes naturally. BTW, Thanks for the resources. all of them are of great help.. :) :P

You are so right about waiting to monetize. This should be a personal decision made by the blogger. What the A-listers say could be true when it comes to the MMO niche, but there are many others out there not in the this niche where monetizing could pay off right from day one.

This blog is really helpful to me. Specially for a new blogger like me. In return I will tag and add this blog to my post in my 7 Brillante Blog Award.

This is an interesting view because it runs counter to much of the advice I have read. I know that a number of blogging experts don’t recommend monetizing with adsense right away because they claim that Google will look at this “negatively.”

From an article on wikipedia about the Google “Sandbox Effect:”

“It is observed that adding Adsense to a new website in the first few weeks of propagation will flag the website to Google and will expedite the Sandbox Effect and elongate the process where its Pagerank moves from a solid bar to PR-0 or more depending on its link popularity.”

I don’t bring this up to be argumentative, but rather to get an opinion: has anyone experienced this “sandbox effect” – taking a long time to get ranked in Google – by monetizing with adsense from day 1 (or shortly thereafter?)

Thanks for posting an opinion that runs contrary to some popular beliefs, it’s always good to challenge what is accepted as “fact.”

  11. Thank you Reyah. Appreciate it very much.

  12. Tony, I’ve heard that claim. But the thing is, if I was going for a quality blog, I would have ads and plenty of content in a few days time. It takes sometime for the SEs to crawl new sites right? But I I was going for a splog I would have 0 content and massive ads. So, in that regard, I’m safe from that flag going up in Google.

Thanks for bringing this up. Appreciate your contribution.

I monetized by blog with Adsense the sooner I created my blog. It is a free hosted blog. I wanted to set the expectations of my readers that my blog is generating revenue. I think some readers or visitors are used with monetized blogs.

it is useless waiting months in order to monetize the blog. My blog is just 5 weeks old and the amount i have made from the blog is very insignificant, (Just over $100 and mostly thanks to pepperjam.) Even though the amount is too small they all add up in the final equation. As nadeesha said even if you make only 0.05 a day with adsense they all add up and you can at least pay your internet bill and the hosting fee after 2 months.

& it will help you keep going as a blogger. And we all know after 9-12 months if we keep posting good entries a blog can be a good money maker. Till we reach that point whats the harm getting paid something for our efforts. At least you will be able to order a pizza while writing your next blog post :-)
