How I got Google to index me seconds after a new post

BEE, which means, Before Everything Else, if you don’t know what ‘Google Webmaster Tools’ is, the I suppose you check this post out, titled, Google Webmasters Tools - making life easier for bloggers. Simply because of the fact that today, we’re going to play a bit around Google and Wordpress integration.

Oh yes! The magical word!! “Integration”. How do we integrate something into wordpress, class? Plugins of course. Now this is not a super secret, but accept it. It had been just that for sometime. As the previously linked post might tell you, Google indexes your site very efficiently when given a sitemap in an XML format. Which is exactly what makes me gets indexed by Google in seconds.

Here is one of the plugins that I myself and a lot of bloggers make the best use of. It’s called ‘Sitemap Generator’. After your blog updates, you can automatically ping it to make your XML sitemap update and in turn, ping Google about it. If you’re really lucky, and the Google spider is nearby your blog, hunting for prey, It’s bound to be indexed within seconds.

Sitemap

The really cool things is you can easily specify the crawl cycles for different portions of your blogs. For an instance, you don’t want to index the archives daily yeah? It get changed once per month only. But your home page? Maybe lesser frequency. And once your blog gets updated, your sitemap gets updated and as I said earlier, gets pinged at Google.

The other thing I really like about Sitemap Generator 2.7 is that it automatically prioritizes your blog posts according to the comments count. For an example, it’ll index a post that has 10 comments more regularly than a post with 5. Which means, your blog-o-sphere popularity is applied to web-o-sphere too. And the other nifty thing is it actually include debug comments in your XML file, so you can easily follow it around even if you choose not to use the plugin in the future. Pretty cool, ha?

I know, this would have been great if I published some real-time stats to back this theory up too. I was hoping to do that when I broke the Olsen story, but then again, it didn’t create so much buzz no way, even if I was the second person in the entire blog-o-sphere to write about it. Turns out, people don’t give so much of a concern about Olsen twins after they turned 21:)

Please comment on what the whole idea was like to you. Would love to have your feedback.

I am not sure if blogger allows that functionality manually. But since Google hosts blogger, you need not worry.

You can send your Atom/RSS feed as a Sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools.
It works great and helps for faster indexing.

I can’t agree more. Adding a Sitemap to your blog/website is the best way to get your site indexed in search engines quickly.

I had recently wrote an article about What a sitemap is, and why and how to add a sitemap to your blog.

@Jimsvarkey: My post can be helpful to you, as well as a more specific article (about Blogspot/Blogger) from Silken Hut. Read How to add a blogspot sitemap in google webmaster tools.

I have not been paying much attention to this issue before now. I guess I have to go back and check if my “Site Generator Plugin” is activated and properly configured. Thanks for pointing this out.
    Cheers.

Imagine since the last time I read that post and dropped a comment (May 3rd) I forgot all about it until today when I went to Google Webmaster tool because of your new post on those of us splitting our pagerank between 2urls. Thanks for sharing the tips.

Thanks for explaining exactly why the sitemap generator is useful - I had read in a few other blogs that it was one of the top plugins to install, but they didn’t explain exactly what it did - and so it wasn’t one of my top priorities. Now it is ;)

I use Blogger. I think the easiest way to get indexed is to comment on blogs or exchange links with indexed blogs, though it may take time. Too bad, Blogger doesn’t use Sitemap.

You blogspot forms are indexed by google but on a different search engine which is blogsearch.google.com. Blogsearch is now used by google to search for information. Did you realized the thing at the bottom part of search results? Those post are the top 3 results for a certain keyword when using blogsearch. Do not worry now. You can also use digg because digg have higher page rank than the original source of the article.
