Cloak your affiliate link to make more money

Here’s a question - If I did a review on the hypothetical affiliate site called “site.com”, and had a link that pointed to http://www.site.com/refer.php?id=XZ89FNOWND909; asking you to signup on that site, what are the chances of you actually clicking it?

My findings have shown me that people are often hesitant to click on affiliate links as such due to two reasons.

  1. It looks really weird with the id numbers and so on.
  2. People actually figure out it’s an affiliate link and directly go to the site because they just don’t want others earning a buck online.

Affiliate marketing is a million dollar industry and most of the time, affiliates tend to lose a lot of money because of their users not going through their affiliate link. And this is where cloaking comes in. And I’m not going to lie, I, along with most of the other bloggers in our niche, do cloak affiliate links. And that’s how we keep paying out bills.

What is URL Cloaking?

With simple URL Cloaking, you can turn - http://www.123AffiliateSite.com/refer.php?id=XZ89FNOWND909; into a user friendly link like - http://www.mySite.com/affiliatesite., thus removing the weirdness of the URL and concealing the fact that it’s an affiliate link.

So how do you do this? Well, it’s really easy. The easy method (PHP include) and the real easy method (tinyurl.com)

The easy method - PHP include

All you have to do is create a PHP file and upload it to your server.

  • Just open notepad or any text editor and type:
<?php include("http://www.site.com/refer.php?id=XZ89FNOWND909"); ?>
  • Make sure you replace what’s within the double quotes (” “) with your affiliate link.
  • Save the file in any name you want (probably a user friendly name) with the .php extension
  • Upload it to your server

And there you have it! If you saved the uploaded the file myFile.php into your server, addressed yourdomain.com, then when people click on a link such as http://www.yourdoamin.com/myFile.php, they will be seamlessly re-directed to your affiliate link, which you put inside the double quotes.

The real easy method - tinyurl.com

It’s too easy. Just paste your affiliate links on the home page of tinyurl, and they will shorten it to something like http://tinyurl.com/123; which, when clicked, will re-direct the people to your original affiliate link.

This comes in handy for blogspot and wordpress.org bloggers especially since to the best of my knowledge, blogspot and wordpress.org doesn’t let you upload PHP files.

Is it ethical?

Well, let me put it this way. I don’t see why it’s unethical. I refer someone to a product or a service, which I think is worth the investment. And in return, the company gives me something. It’s a WIN/WIN situation. Concealing your affiliate link is not hiding what you do. It’s making the best return out of what you offer.

If someone doesn’t click on mine or any other Internet marketer’s affiliate link, just so that we won’t make a few bucks, would that be ethical? Over to you.

Ah, ethics are the tricky part, aren’t they? Sure, you and I will only affiliate with and recommend sites that we know and trust. Others will recommend the site with the highest commission rate, regardless of customer service or personal experience.

Consumers tend to be very wary when they (we) know that other people are making money from a sale. I’m not sure how to overcome this. You could create a page that explain that you personally shop at all the sites affiliated with RockFuse and in your experience, they provide excellent customer service. I might read it, if I happened to notice it in the navigation. I’m not sure how many others would, or if they would care.

Thanks for this. I’ve often wondered whether to cloak links before. It wasn’t for ethical reasons. One could argue that the visitor who gets rid of your referral link was the one “cheating”. But I’m mainly interested in how one could do this with a blog. ie linking to a php page.

Jenny, I’m glad that you found this useful. Happy to be of assistance. I also stand on your view-point. Though I wouldn’t exactly call it cheating if someone doesn’t follow my affiliate link, I would however claim that it’s unethical.

      Cheers!

I quite agree with you. It is a good idea to cloak the affliate link. Visitors often get repulsed when they discover that a link is actually an affiliate link. I don’t know why, but I can testify that if I know that a link is an affiliate link, 90% I will not click on it. Thanks for sharing the tips. Cheers.

I agree! It might even be more than 90%.. Amazing how people would take the extra trouble to prevent others from making some money even if they’re not losing anything.

Some bloggers affiliate link to whatever pays best and some affiliate link to stuff they really like. Here’s the acid test… read the prose around the link. If it’s drivel hyperbole, the blogger probably never even used the product. If they have genuine enthusiasm and a real personal story that seems to go with the rest of the blog, then they are probably truthfully recommending it. If they have affiliate or cloaked affiliate links mixed in with just straight non monetized links, it’s tells me “Here is stuff I really like,if I can make a buck or two I will but if I can’t I’ll still tell my readers about it.” If EVERY single link is monetized (tinyurl or jump.php is a dead giveaway as well) I tend to think the blogger is more about pushing affiliate links and less about how good the product is.

Well, I believe most of us end up in the latter category rather than the former. After all, since you’re cloaking an affiliate link, why not take another 5 seconds and cloak them all?

Tony, visitors fail to click affiliate links because it makes it obvious the fact that the page providers are getting paid to link and it diminishes their credibility. A smart visitor can tell a cloaked link just as easily and unless you frame it tinyurl reveals the real link once you get there. If you are talking about brandxcameras.com and your url is tinyurl.com or http://mydomain.com/something.php I KNOW it’s a cloaked link.
