AdSense success comes from careful optimizations and monitoring – contrary to what most publishers believe. And in my endeavors with AdSense, I’ve found these 14 plugins to help me make more money through AdSense.

So, today, I’d like to review these 14 plugins, and tell you how exactly you could benefit from using them. Please do try them out and let me know your opinions.

AdSense Manager

AdSense Manage is a cool “All-in-one” plugin that serves the purposes of putting up AdSense on your blog. It generates code automatically and allows positioning with Widgets, which really cool, because you don’t have to visit AdSense control panel every time you need to generate an ad code for a new block.

Download Now

AdSense-Deluxe 2

I can remember when AdSense deluxe used to be the best Wordpress plugin for AdSense publishers having Wordpress blogs. Offers a similar functionality like AdSense Manager. You can add code blocks and assign tags to them, which you can paste anywhere in your blog, including within post content. Has features to globally control all your AdSense ad blocks from the control panel.

Download Now

All in One AdSense and YPN

I bet most of you who can’t be bothered to put up AdSense in everyone of your posts would really dig this one. All in One AdSense and YPN, automatically inserts AdSense/YPN blocks into all of your blog posts – on the fly. One of the better AdSense I’m using right now.

Download Now

Ozh’ Who Sees Ads

Who Sees Ads is an advanced ad management plugin that lets you decide who will see your ads, depending on user defined conditions. You can manage ads in your templates or within posts and pages. You can define different criteria for displaying ads for different people. As in regular reader, search engine visitors, first time visitors and so on.

Download Now

Random / Rotating Ads

Google AdSense, affiliate ads, banners, images, flash, text, etc… you name it! This plugin can rotate any kind of an ad anywhere in your blog. It’s great if you want to rotate your affiliate banners and YPN ads in the middle of all the AdSense blocks. And there’s no limit for the number ads you want to put up for rotation.

Download Now

Smart Ads

Some of you might not want to complicate the whole “AdSense thing” on your blog. For those you, Smart Ads automatically inserts advertisements like Google’s Adsense above and below your post content. These advertisements are only visible when viewing a single post. It comes with a pretty simple setup and usage.

Download Now

Google AdSense for Feeds

Automatically put AdSense on your feed. If Feedburner AdSense ads are not working out for you or if you’re not using FeedBurner to serve your feed, this could be the next best thing for you. Install it, set the settings, apply your publisher id and you’re done.

Download Now

More from Google

The More from Google plugin, also allows you to specify a search term for each post. This search term is used to create a link at the bottom of your post linking to search results for that term. This encourages your readers to Google for related articles, without leaving your site. Helps you earn more money from “AdSense for Search”.

Download Now

Add Post Footer

Adds a post footer for all your blog posts. This is not a plugin that is totally dedicated to AdSense. Instead, it let’s you set a default footer for all your blog posts so that you may put everything you want in the footer plus, some AdSense ads. A simple plugin with a simple concept, I’d say.

Download Now

Ad Integration

Provides a simple interface for you to just add Google AdSense to your blog posts. Not a very usable plugin compared to AdSense Manager and a couple of others, but keeps stuff simple, and supports virtually any ad type.

Download Now

AdSense Integrator

This plugin was developed to insert and manage your AdSense ads, based on the last Google rules and AdSense updates. Something like the Ad Integration Wordpress Plugin, but dedicated to serving AdSense ads only.

Download Now

AdSense Under Image

Here’s something for those of you who run photo blogs. AdSense Under Image insert an automatic AdSense block after the first image appearing in the blog post, for all of your blog posts in the blog. With a lot of images, adding AdSense can be a hassle for all you photo blog owners. This plugin simplifies that.

Download Now

Googmonify

Some thing like AdSense deluxe, offering the same functionality. Googmonify lets you insert Google AdSense ad units into your posts with easy to use tag sets. The cool part is that you can set up ad tracking to have an accurate bird eye view of how your ads perform.

Download Now

WP Tag Ads

Display Google AdSense ads based not on your post content, but your post tags. This help you put more relevant ads into the post content and in turn, make more money as a result. If you currently do section targeting on your blog, this can especially helpful for you to automate the process.

The following set of programs are widely accepted within a large number of publishers and advertisers and can monetize your traffic, the same way you expected AdSense to.

Clicksor

Contextual advertising technology by Clicksor allows online visitors to enjoy the content of the Web site and bring generous earnings to webmasters at the same time. Clicksor will pay webmasters up to 60% of the advertising revenue to place contextual ads on their Web sites or blogs. Payments are based on a net 15-term on a bi-weekly schedule. Webmasters can select from a wide range of media, such as text banners, graphical banners, pop-under advertisements, full page interstitial, search boxes, contextual inline links, layer ads and XML feed to host on their Web sites or blogs.

Yahoo! Publisher Network

Yahoo! Publisher Network is Yahoo!’s answer to Google AdSense. Need I say more? Not much different to Google AdSense except for the fact that Yahoo! Shopping ads also appear in the ad spaces.

AdBrite

AdBrite can help you monetize your site with advertising that fits the content and user base of your site. AdBrite serves ads on nearly 1 billion pages daily, providing massive scale opportunities. In addition to text and banner ads, AdBrite offers advanced options like our Full Page Ad, BritePic, Inline and InVideo ad types. These formats will allow you to show high-value ads without losing site real estate—and the multimedia formats let you take advantage of the photos and video clips on your site.

BidVertiser

Display the BidVertiser text ads on your website or blog, get paid for every click and have the payments sent directly to your PayPal account. The best thing about BidVertiser is that your advertisers can bid for the ad space on your blog, hence the name BidVertiser. More than being focused on displaying network adverts, BidVertiser CPC slots are more into letting you sell your own blog’s ad spaces to your own site visitors interested in advertising on your site.

Chitika

Chitika ads are a great fit for any website with any type of content including automotive, finance, health, gadgets and electronics, news, sports, travel, etc. If your website gets a lot of U.S. traffic, then Chitika Premium ads are a perfect match for you. Chitika Premium ads will only show to U.S. traffic, and since they are behaviorally targeted they will display to your U.S. search engine traffic (and certain other traffic). When your Premium ad unit does display for a visitor it will show them advertisements they are interested in (because, after all, it’s behaviorally targeted).

A word of caution to you…

When you’re looking for AdSense alternatives you’ll find many CPC networks. But just keep in mind that most of these networks also have other types of advertising going for them, such as pop-under or even adverts supported by spammy adware. For an instance, a network like FastClick is getting blocked by most of the leading spyware blockers since it promotes spyware and adware.

Steer clear out of these. Not only they can ruin your relationship with your readers, but when they are blocked, they will most probably ruin your blogs formatting – leaving out large chunks of blank space. However, I can assure you that these programs have no such issues.

Today I’ll be posting a step by step guy on how to add Inline AdSense code to the middle of your blog posts. Not only AdSense, but you can use this for Yahoo! Publisher Network ads, Bidvertiser and etc. We’ll be going through all the details and utilizing a plugin, and a simple theme hack to complete the trick which will add AdSense block within all your blog posts, published already and to be be published.

But, first of all, why would you want to add inline AdSense Code? Because that improves your AdSense Ad block visibility. You blog post will wrap around the Inline AdSense slot, so that’ll make sure a good number of your visitors reading the post will ultimately see the Ad – instantly boosting your AdSense CTR…

Ready? Here we go… We will insert a blog of AdSense code to everyone of your posts, making the post wrap around the block, to the top left corner. (I’ll show you how to customize this later in the post)

The Method – Adding AdSense code

1. Copy your AdSense code and keep it in the clipboard.

2. Open your wordpress theme editor and open the Single Post Template (single.php) or whichever the template file for your Single Posts. (We’ll add AdSense only to the individual posts)

3. Then find the line of code which says:

<?php the_content(‘Read the rest of this entry &raquo;’); ?>

4. Got it? Awesome! Now, right before this code, insert a new line and type out the following coding. Replace <your AdSense code here> with your AdSense code. (A screen shot is given below)

<div style=”float:left;”><your AdSense code here></div>

5. Update your theme changes! And you’re done with adding the AdSense code.

Now, you must be able to see an AdSense code being placed Inline with all your posts to the top left corner.

How to customize the position?

Simple. First, you must understand a few things.

One, the php code you hunted down: “<?php the_content(‘Read the rest of this entry &raquo;’); ?>” – resembles the function which will call your blog posts’ text. Not the header, just the text and the body content i.e. Images and etc. So, if you insert the AdSense code after this line, unlike the previous example, you should see the AdSense block after each post.

Two, in the Div Container code: “<div style=”float:left;”><your AdSense code here></div>” – “float: left;” means that you’d align the AdSense block to the left of the post. To make it align to the opposite end, just replace it with “float: right;”.

So, there you go. I hope you’ll find this useful. If there’s anything you’d like to know or clarify, just shoot me a message.

I knew sometime back that I’d be forced to stop running it somewhere down the line but never thought it should be this soon. And if you’ve observed the fact, many blogs in the same niche as mine do not run AdSense at all.

Although AdSense can be highly effective in some niches, in some, like mine, it can be fairly useless and a waste of resources. The objective of this blog post is not to tell you guys that “AdSense sucks!”, because it doesn’t. The objective is to show that putting all your eggs in the AdSense basket not knowing whether you can profit more from other sources is “losing money“.

Lack of quality advertisers

When I was running AdSense on this blog sometime back, what I noticed was that there was only about 3 or 4 ads being circulated through all of my AdSense advertising. When a visitor sees an ad that he or she had clicked before two or three times, what are the chances of he/she clicking it again? So, the conclusion is that in some niches, there exists a lack of AdSense advertisers; And that in turn leads to publishers not being able to reap what they saw.

When I put the 468×60 banner on top of all of my posts, 80% of the time it displayed the same two ads. But if I have a rotating 468×60 banner at it’s place, I’d have had better luck.

Ad-blind visitors

There are so many AdSense publishers around and that had made the net-savvy people visiting blogs like these virtually ad-blind. They see the boxes, the ads, tend to read them in the first couple of hundred impressions and thereafter, ignorance is bliss.

To tackle this, I used to change the position of the ads, the layout and the color schemes but it was just becoming too much of a hassle. Not to mention it was also a fairly limited change since naturally, we’re all restrained by a thing called a blog-theme.

Other revenue streams outperforming AdSense

Honestly, this had been the biggest reason why I let go of AdSense. Other more profitable revenue streams started kicking in and AdSense didn’t prove to be the most profitable one compared weighed against resources invested. But the most important thing is that none of these alternatives were contextual advertising programs. And at this point, I became open to the possibility that it wasn’t AdSense, but rather contextual advertising as a whole. But the heart of the matter is that this solely depends on the blog niche.

Useless section targeting

When there’s a lack of advertisers, features like section targeting to target a micro-niche become useless. An AdSense publisher’s trump card might as well be the section targeting feature. And when it’s played out, there’s not much one can do to stay in the game. In a bigger niche where there’s no lack of advertisers, section targeting may significantly boost the income. But when 3-4 ads are being rotated in a certain niche, section targeting will sometimes return only the public service ads.

Although I’m a very charitable person, that’s not why I run AdSense now it it? If you want to know more about section targeting in AdSense, please refer to this article.

Of course, this is my opinion, and you guys are free to have totally different views. But I should tell you that I have experienced these things in practice and that’s what influenced me to do an article on this. And I’d be very surprised to see a blogger in my niche running AdSense on a blog where other revenue streams are proven to be relatively unsuccessful.

Although it works in many blogs, sometimes I feel that some blogs can earn much more money by altering their AdSense placement/color codes just a little bit. It’s a shame to see them wasting money since my philosophy states, ‘a penny not earned is a penny wasted’

I had been able to boost my AdSense earnings by following some of these tips and I believe I must share it my readers, to let you guys try ‘em out. Please be sure to let me know you find ‘em ‘really’ working.

Don’t put AdSense blocks all over your blog!

Why?

It’ll confuse your readers and give the impression that you’re a sellout.

Your earning will significantly drop.

Since you can probably figure out number one, I’ll shed some light on to the number two. Yes, It’s True! More AdSense units mean lesser payouts. Suppose there are 3 units of ad blocks in your page. (AdSense TOS only allow you to have a maximum of 3 ad blocks per page, by the way) Hypothetically that the same ad is displayed throughout. If the top block pays you $0.20 for a click, the next one would pay you $0.15., and the bottom one will only pay $0.10! (Please note that those are hypothetical values. These rates differ for various reasons) So if you have adsense blocks crawling throgh out your pages, I recommend having only 1-2 ad blocks per page. Not only will it remove the clutter, it will also increase your revenue.

Of course, Google won’t tell you this directly. They get a fixed rate per click from advertisers. To the extent of my knowledge I don’t see Google getting reduced payouts depending on the ad placement. But have to research a bit to be sure. It only matters to the publisher. I found this out by only experimenting with my Ad channels after some top-notch bloggers revealed it.

Placing an ad block, right-in-the-face!

Have one AdBlock right-in-the-face of the visitor. This is usually called “above the fold” placement. Because I want to be clear and concise in my description, I invented the term”right-in-the-face”!

Have one AdBlock that catches the visitors eye right when he/she visits your page. Without scrolling, and without getting distracted by something flashy. This helps you to actually get a reader to read your ads, and increase the chances of that user earning you some bucks.

Suppose that you’re enjoying a huge traffic spike from StumbleUpon; some of those users will only stay in your site for under 1 seconds before they click the ‘Stumble!’ button again. Getting them to read one of your ads is a sweet deal!

Quality, not the quantity!

Except for having 14 different Ad Blocks throughout your site, stick to 2-3 well-performing ad units. Off the first tip, this will help you earn more and reduce the clutter.

These ad block types might change from blog to blog depending on your blog design. But most of the time, the medium and the large types out-perform the others. D’oh!

Blend it with your content.

Although Google’s Ad Sense FAQs state that it’s good to have contrasting Ad Blocks, I respectfully disagree.

Don’t treat Ad Sense blocks as a separate part of your site. They are IN you site so that makes them a part of your site. If you’re expecting to create a spammy blog, go ahead, contrasting can do you wonders. And also, can make your site wonderfully amateurish. But if you’re planning to run your blog for a blog time, blend, blend, blend!

If you bend in your ad blocks with the existing site content, readers will anyway read them as a part of your blog. May it be deliberate or accidental. Contrasting would either make them read it or make them ignore it at the first glance. All in all, blending it with the content is the safest bet.

Ad block colors

Have a contrasting border and if possible, keep the link color blue. Getting the ad block background to blend with the site content and border to be contrasting would give you the edge in catching the eye of the reader.

And the blue links? People are used to blue as the link color. Which means, if it’s blue, they know there’s something to click there. But if these changes feel like you’re ruining the flow of your blog design, you can safely ignore these two things.

Keep an eye on the CTR and evolve!

Keep your eye on CTR. CTR means the click-through rate and you can spot that in your AdSense dashboard. If you get around 1-2 clicks per 100 impressions, that means you are not doing very good converting your traffic into revenue. (Impressions mean the number of times a page with your AdSense ad code had been viewed) This tells you whether it’s time to evolve or not.

Rotate your blocks around the blog a bit and see whether CTR improves. If it doesn’t improve even then, you need a new approach. Perhaps, change of ad block units and all. Keep evolving. That’s the only way to stay on top of your game.

Make use of the channels

Many bloggers don’t use AdSense channels or use them poorly. If you already use AdSense channels to track the performance of single pages in your blog, well, you can take a step further and create different channels for different ad blocks. This way you can see in what shapes and forms your AdSense revenue is generated from and exploit it.

This helped me gain some valuable expertise into maximizing my AdSense revenue. And it had been very helpful in getting these AdSense tips straight. So, please do consider tracking AdSense block per channel. Might be a hassle but it’s worth every single second sacrificed!

Relative content and a smaller scope does really good.

As you may know, AdSense for content displays the relative ads picked up from your content. Diversified blog posts or very long blog posts about random things will often force AdSense to display irrelevant ads or public service ads. To prevent this from happening, keep your blog posts clear and concise and in a relatively small scope. If you tend to post larger posts, split them up if you can afford it.

Section Targeting for non-niche bloggers

If you’re a blogger finding it hard to follow the earlier tip, and if you’re a non-niche blogger, try section tageting. Section targeting allows you to tell AdSense to display ads relative to a specific part of your blog or blog post. For and example, if you blog about mobile phones and happened to mention NASCAR as well, you can target the mobile phone ads by highlighting content about mobile phones.

Want to know how to do section targeting? Read this section of AdSense help.

Consistent ad word density

Although this might make a blog look a bit spammy, a good content writer can always make it happen. But overdoing this will only make you lose your readers. If you keep a good density of ad words throughout your posts, you can get the relative ads you are targeting. It’s almost like writing for a search engine spider targeting search engine traffic.

Experiment frequently and evolve!

Web page tend to have declining revenue from AdSense if they don’t evolve. If your blog has repeating visitors, the same ad blocks with the same placement unchanged for months could make them virtually invisible towards your ad placements. Don’t do that! Experiment frequently. Even if you have a CTR of 35%, that doesn’t mean, through experimentation you can make it 45%.

Keep an eye on all your AdSense statistics, channels, CTR(as I said before) and try to pull off the best possible recipe. Also, be patient. Some successful AdSense publishers I know had to wait for an year or so before they started making money from their blogs and web sites.

There are no magic beans for sustained long-term AdSense earnings. Play your cards right and be patient. You can undoubtedly get there! MindBlogger wishes you best of luck.

Update [March 17th 2008]:

Allen from 366 FREE Internet Marketing Tips AND Secrets let a comment on this blog, which unfortunately got caught on Akismet spam by mistake. However, I’ve recovered it and I believe it’s a comment, noteworthy.

The only thing I’d like to add is that if you do want to max out a page with Adsense, you can have 3 normal ads, 3 referral ads AND 2 text link ads. With all things Internet the answer of course is to test and what I generally do is give all the ads the same channel code and then work out the best number and combination over the next few weeks.
