I came across this e-mail by BlogCatalog a while ago. It’s about a widget they claim to be the “most useful, innovative widget that BlogCatalog has launched so far”. Personally I’ve not been a hardcore fan of BlogCatalog, but after testing the waters, I am considering inducting the widget into my blog. After all, this new widget, “News Feed”, might be the next level of a blogger’s typical social widget.
What does it do? Well, as they claim, basically whatever you wanted a social widget on your blog to do. It can obtain your latest activities from a number of social networks. To be precise, Amazon Wish lists, BlogCatalog, Delicious, Digg, Facebook, Flickr, Last.fm, Multiply, MySpace, Sphinn, StumbleUpon, Twitter, YouTube, and more.
It would definitely replace those half a dozen of social network widgets you’re running on your sidebar and save you some real-estate while giving you the option of staying connected with your friends, across the networks. People can even subscribe to your “News Feed” and follow you around. This might be a great way to let your friends/followers/fans know about that great post you stumbled, or simply, to get their eyes on the new Flickr album.
And, don’t worry about keeping your blog design consistent. You can customize this widget anyway you want! After all, that’s what a widget should be right?
Off their official e-mail, “The bottom line: it’s very dynamic and versatile tool because it’s one of the first cross social network solutions out there” Though I’m not planning to switch from my “Twitter Widget” to “News Feed” here and now, you’d definitely see it in a couple of days. So, ‘go’ social?
Thanks for the heads-up on this widget. I joined BlogCatalog quite a while ago but in all honesty I have not been around there for a while (there was far too much spamming at that time). You have got me thinking, maybe it is time that I give them a visit again.
Hi Arnold,
Thanks for the feedback. I think what you are referring to spam may be email notifcations that you receive when certain things happen, like someone sends you a shout. All these notifications can be turned off.
Tony
Hi Tony,
I think it is a big revolution. Yet i haven’t decided whether i should put it on my blog or not. Thanks for this nice post.
Good luck!
Mert
I found your link over at bloggeries. On topic, I joined the blog catalog a couple of weeks ago when my blog was new and they rejected me due to not having enough content. I re-submitted my blog Monday and they accepted it this time. I’ll have to try out the new widget, the one that I have now does not fit properly.
I think so too arnold. Although Antony from BlogCatalog was so kind enough to address the spamming issue here at MindBLOGGER. You can view his comment below.
Thank you for addressing this issue Antony. I was also wondering about the possibility in controlling the notifications.
Thanks for the comment Mert. If you were indeed talking to me, just call me nadz:)
Yeap. BlogCatalog tends to be picky when allowing people into their own community. Hope the new social news feed does you well. Thanks for your comment.
Nadeesha, many members like the notifications. I have them all turned of as it’s bit too overwhelming when they are on.
Hi i am so pleased I found your blog, I really found you by mistake, while I was searching Yahoo for something else, At Any Rate I am here now and would just like to say thank you for a wonderful blog posting and a all round intriguing blog (I also love the theme/design), I do not have time to read it all at the right now but I have bookmarked it and also added your RSS feeds.
