24 Killer Link Building Strategies for your Blog.

117131491_ac37423de5_m Some say that SEO is dead and some say it’s not. But what most of them will agree on is that “links” are still the trump card for the Internet Marketer in the new world. And so, I would list here 24 of the best link building strategies that I think you guys will find useful.

I made an attempt to make this list a practical one, not trying to push in the other 101 link building tactics that you wouldn’t find useful in today’s Web 2.0 SEO world.

And you will find 3 categories here – first, Innovative Link Building Strategies will house the best strategies that hadn’t been exhausted by people. Not-so Innovative Link Building Strategies are worth a shot, but might not work as well as the first. And the last, Bad Link Building Strategies that can possibly hurt you houses some strategies and practices you should probably avoid.

So, Enjoy!

9 Innovative Link Building Strategies

Build a useful Firefox extension, and have a support page on your site for it’s users. The initial effort might be a bit hard but with an innovative idea, it can really pay off. Be sure to build a plugin that your specific niche finds useful.

Add Technorati tags to your posts. I have developed a tool called Technorati Tag Generator which will simplify this process.

Create a good Squidoo lens. Squidoo lenses tend to rank really well in search engines and also pretty easy to monetize as well. But it’s important that you create a good informative lens to maximize the SEO value passed through links back to your own blog.

Review not-so-well established affiliate products. It’s really easy to gain a higher place in search engines for these product. And these pages will perform well in SERPs when people are searching for product reviews since there’s not that much competition.

Comment on much smaller blogs in the same niche. Some of these bloggers will be willing to collaborate with you and frequently link to your blog to show their appreciation.

Write about startups and link to them. These companies often have news pages where they acknowledge the people who talked about their product. I myself had gained links this way with a few startups like Plurk and Woopra.

Collaborate with other bloggers to promote each other. The progress can be slow but effects can be really rewarding. In a few weeks, all of the blogs in the circle will equally gain search engine exposure.

Create Wordpress themes. Well, you actually must have some designing and coding experience to do this, but the results are just phenomenal! If you are ready to make an initial investment, get it easily done by a freelance designer.

Compose linkbaits. There’s a whole community of bloggers wanting to link to you. Composing a linkbait that other people perceive as “good quality content” is not the easiest thing to do, but it’s one of the best.

11 Not-so Innovative Link Building Strategies

Gain social media exposure. Some social media sites pass out dofollow links on published content and links on personal profiles. Be sure not to exploit them because there are hordes of loyal members in them that can take you out before you spell S-E-O.

Do some dofollow blog commenting. But be sure to contribute well constructed non-spammy content to that blog to avoid being stamped as spam. At all costs, refrain from providing classic two word appreciation for the article.

Submit your feed to RSS directories. You can pretty much gain a few backlinks from these with minimal effort. The SEO value passed through these is not the best around, but still good.

Do press releases. These are very much like one-time article submissions. But they are picked up by search engines and treated with relative importance so, the initial effort might not hurt.

Do guest posts. There’s a right way to do this and a wrong way to do this. Some bloggers think that doing a guest post on a PR6 site is really good because they’ll get a valued link to their blog. But it’s the exposure and the other few hundred links that you’d get to your blog from the large readership of that PR 6 blog that counts.

Run blog contests. Everyone does it, and it has guaranteed SEO effects. The exposure to your blog and gaining new readership are just two of the by products of running a successful blog contest.

Do forum posting. Again, this is a debatable subject. But the added benefit here is that these links can pass enormous amounts of traffic as well as some SEO value.

Do article submissions. The effect of this is debatable but, it has some effect alright. Some say article directories are on the way out and it’s not entirely untrue. It takes a lot of time to compose articles and submit them, not to forget.

Request reciprocal links. Keep your reciprocal links to a minimum and don’t include a “links page” within your blog/site that would contain links to dozens and dozens of other sites. A few sitewide links that are relevant to your subject matter would be just fine.

Submitting your site to link directories. Contrary to popular belief I think this method is on the way out. It can consume a lot of time and because pages are so full of links, they don’t actually pass that much value to the site it’s linking to.

4 Bad Link Building Strategies that can possibly hurt you

Submitting your site to Link farms. It’s widely accepted that planting a mass number of links in single page has demeaning SEO consequences. Putting up a link farm on your own site is more damaging.

Interlinking sites on the same IP. If I have 5 sites being interlinked to each other and all of them are in the same server, with the same IP address, they would pass no/very low SEO juice.

Buying up a massive number of links at once can hurt you temporarily. It’s best to increase the number of links to your site while maintaining a natural link profile. Going from0 to 500 links overnight can really hurt you.

Blog Spamming. When you’re spamming wordpress blogs, it’s be really easy for you to get blacklisted with your e-mail and domain name after a few bloggers marking your comments as spam. If that happens, most of your comments on wordpress blogs and other sites that use Akismet would be treated as spam.

Akismet should cool down. They are limiting themselves to a smaller portion of the society. There are false positives in spam detection of akismet.

Just keep blogging and network yourself.

These are all great link building strategies. A lot of people have been talking about this kind of thing but you have definitely added to their list.

  3. Matt says:

These are some excellent suggestions – thankyou! We use a lot of them in our business at present.
One thing people might like to add if they are running a website that offers a product or service, or even if they are just directing to a squeeze page – use Craigslist or other classified websites.
The link juice given back from a site such as Craigslist can be huge – especially with a brand new domain that needs to be indexed quickly.

This is one of the better link strategies posts I have seen. Good job man. Out of all of these strategies, which one was the most successful for RockFuse?

  5. Thanks for you tips Matt. I will try Craiglists out.

  6. That’s a hard one. I’d say blog contests, reviewing stuff and buying links proved to be really healthy.

  7. Quite a complete list, thanks. LOL you doubled my little list and then some. Think I like yours better. The 4 no-nos were a great touch, to many try them and  never know how much it hurts them.

Great Article. I see that you used blog collaboration as a tip. :) Lol Also, I see you’re using AdSense now. I just wrote an “Epic AdSense” post that you may want to check out for you’re making a few mistakes already. ;)

  10. I understand most everything here and these all sounds like great ideas, except for the bad ones of course. I especially like the idea of making a firefox plugin. That seems like it could get you a massive amount of links if it is any good.

The one I still don’t quite understand is the squido lens thing. I have been hearing about that recently and also singed up for it, but I don’t really “get it” It’s suppsed to be just like a static webpage that you can link back to your site?

    Thanks.

  11. You’re quite right. I hope they do something about Akismet soon.

  12. Thanks a lot. I only hoped to add something new rather than repeating the content which had been going around for the past few years.

  13. Thanks a lot. I will check out your list in due time :)

  14. Thanks Alena. Appreciate it a lot.

  15. Thanks Taylor. AdSense was just a flick. I was just testing a new plugin I wrote. One thing I figured out early on is that AdSense doesn’t quite work out for this niche.

  16. Gerald, yes, it’s kind of like a stats page where you can add info and stuff about a topic that you want. The advantage is that Squidoo lenses rank really well in Search Engines so a link back + traffic from a Squidoo lens will be substantial.

  18. ATOzTOA says:

I tried the Technorati Tags, but it is not pleasing to see… just the tags.

What about social bookmarking? For me it had worked magic…

If you are looking for monetizing… then there are far better ways than adsense…
