Well, if you were wondering why these SEO people and all these bloggers are always going crazy on this ‘link-popularity’ thing and never getting over it, it’s because this ‘link-popularity’ thing is the single most important concern of building site traffic. So with this and the following post, we’ll discuss 10 somewhat-of-the-box-link-popularity-building techniques.
1. Create ‘em links.
This is the most pain-staking, but probably the best long-term strategy that a webmaster or a blogger should be having. The basic theorem is to create as many different pages to be linked as possible.
Create content! That’s the way. Give your reader enough ‘QUALITY’ content to read about. Then they will ultimately link back! And when they link back, your link popularity would significantly go higher. If you’re a blogger, having quality content in your site, and a lot of it with a good Permalink structure will bless you with some serious search engine traffic boosting!
Suppose you are writing on a really broad subject. You can always create more links with breaking your post.
For an example, take this blog post. 10 proven methods to improve your link popularity. Suppose I break this post into 10 different posts. I’d be having 10 links instead yeah? So if someone finds this article useful, chances are that this person will be craving to find out all those 10 links yeah? So when people link back to my site, instead of giving them one giant link, I give them 10 different links. So if someone wants to link back, probably, I’d be having more than one link-back from a reader. And that will multiply my site’s link popularity in many times.
2. Be diplomatic. Exchange links!
If you know any blogger/webmaster who’s creating content in the same area you are, then go for a link exchange. It would really help. Just drop in an e-mail politely asking for a link exchange. And make sure you ask them to check your site out before linking to them. This will give them an impression of your genuineness.
Suppose you got a link-exchange from a site which is more popular than you. Then it’d simply boost your popularity too. For an instance, Google’s PageRank system does this. If your Page Rank is 5 and a Page Rank 9 site links to your site, Google automatically comes to a conclusion that your site is valued just because a high valued site linked to you.
But this is always a double-edged sword. Do this carefully. You don’t want to have a lot of outbound links from your site re-directing your potential visitors to bigger competitors, yeah? So have your limits on this one.
And most importantly, keep to your lane. Exchange links with only quality, related sites.
3. Make use of those FREE directories.
Submit your site to those FREE directories like DMOZ. They can give your link popularity a real boost. Because they are highly-moderated, and high-quality, search engines and people have a lot of respect towards them. Since they are FREE, why not make them work for you? As your site grows, and when you are thinking of allocating some money for marketing your site, you can even make use of the paid directories like Yahoo!. Remember, directories give you clean, quality, targeted traffic! Don’t miss them. Here are a few quality directories…
Open Directory – http://dmoz.org
Jayde B2B Directory – http://dir.jayde.com
GoGuides Directory – http://www.goguides.org
JoeAnt Directory – http://www.joeant.com

4. Create influential site content!
Influence your visitors. Appeal to their better nature. Always try to give them something valuable and useful. Don’t exaggerate about your work. Just do a good job and let them decide. From time to time, create content that inspire your readers. Hit ‘em up emotionally. And be clear and concise in your point. Don’t drag it up just because you want people to see it’s a long post. You’re going to be built upon your readers. So is your blog. So, influence them and make them your disciples. And like disciples would do anything for their mentor, you will end-up with few links. So this is just a method of getting link-backs right? Yeah! More links could never hurt your link popularity.
5. Find related blog posts in other blogs and comment on them.
Check out some other blogs that feature the same post titles that you do. Comment on them. Why? You can always find those posts and point-out something you can add to them. For an example, if some blog has an article about link-popularity, I can probably share some insights with that blogger. And I do it in his comments box. And if your content is really good, you’ll be ending up with him linking to your blog frequently. If not, a blogger who’s looking for the things that post feature is sure to visit your blog. You can always add the line “If you’re interested, just check out my blog. I’ve kind of elaborated the whole thing much better there.” That works. Trust Me!
